Colorado Springs, CO – The Colorado Springs Thunder and Parker Prowlers rivalry took another turn this past weekend as they met in the Rocky Mountain Division Finals. The Thunder welcomed the visitors into the CET Sports Arena on Friday night looking for a little redemption after losing their final regular season game to these same Prowlers. Colorado Springs came into the Finals after an easy 1st round sweep of the Mile High Miners while the Prowlers had a little tougher road as it took three games to put away the Fort Collins Catz. The house was packed as fans looked forward to a physical, tight battle between two teams that do not like each other.
Game 1 saw the home team take an early lead on a tip in goal by team leading scorer, CJ Yoder on a beautiful pass from Mike Ciolli. The Thunder never backed down as Ciolli added another goal in the first and then 2 more early in the second to take a commanding 4-0 lead. The only blemish on goalie Mike Gipson was a power play goal by Jeff Carlo on a nice, back door pass from Jordan Bateman.
In the second contest the Thunder found themselves in a battle as the Prowlers scored just :23 in but saw that early lead slip away quickly as Jami Yoder came right back with a great shot over the glove of goaltender, Corey Walters. The first period was a back and forth affair as both teams got one more before CJ Yoder scored unassisted with only :08 to go in the 1st half. That was a back breaker for the Prowlers as the favorites took advantage of every opportunity and put three more unanswered past the goaltending of Walters and back up James Risenhoover to skate away with a 6-2 win and a sweep of the Prowlers.
The Thunder now wait to see who will emerge out of the Gateway Division to see who they will face in two weeks for the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder look to take even another step towards meeting the Eastern champs, Suffolk Sting and a shot at their 3rd Founders Cup Championship.
