Some teams coasted and others had tight games with exciting outcomes. Nonetheless, some move on, some move on home.
UConn / Rutgers was a strategic match that both teams played to a one goal win for UConn just months ago. Rutgers was coming into the game on an 11 game losing streak dating back almost two months. Losing all 3 pool games put the Knights into a corner. Head coach Bob Fulton got the team to buy into a new system. “They were patient and they believed,” he said. The game was tight all the way through. Jared Reisman, the team’s top defender, chipped in a goal, an assist and some stellar defense. Jared, smiling, stated “It was the best game I’ve ever played in.” Goaltender Ryan McCord stopped 24 key shots for victors and named countless keys to their victory, but never spoke of himself. He was elected first star of the game. Rutgers will see Michigan State in the morning.
West Chester / Brockport was another great game featuring some young student athletes with bright futures in the NCRHA. Brockport came out and popped in the first goal 7 minutes into the game. WCU came back with the next four. Tallies by Devon Auge, Josh Murphy, Charles Plinke and Adam St. Clair set them up to cruise. A bad penalty along with a power play goal for Brockport slowed things down. The adversity set off team leader Kevin Keene and forward Jack Grossman to bear things down and get the team forward to the next round.
Eastern Michigan was the first to move ahead, beating Buffalo 9-2. Sam Nixdorf led the way with 4 goals and 3 assists for the winners.
Ohio State paced themselves to a 8-3 win over Michigan. Dan Dukart and James Bush had 2 goals each for the Buckeyes.
Blink and you would have missed the UMSL win over Central Florida. The game was an end to end battle that featured some quick back to back goals on both sides. The Tritons are looking to better their final four performance of a year ago.
Tampa was down 3-1 to start the 2nd period. They know it isn’t how you start, but they know how to finish. They proceed to put in the next 9 out of 10 goals in the game and top Metro State to move ahead.
In the night cappers both Cal Poly SLO and WCRHL champion UC Santa Barbara also rolled through their opponents. These are two teams not to take lightly, in any capacity.
Either way…Off to Round 2
