The New Jersey Grizzlies swept the Long Island Sting on Sunday November 28 at ISCA. “It feels nice to win four straight, we needed to play better” says Co-Captain James Manganaro. The Grizzlies would find themselves down 1-0 at the half due to a Sting power play goal but answered quickly in the second half with an onslaught which would start with a shorthanded goal by James Manganaro with assists to Phil Cocozzo and Tim Fulton. The Grizzlies would take a 2-1 lead on a snipe by usually shy to shoot Matt Grossi with assists to Chris Wolf and Tim Fulton. They would answer with another goal with a turnover from Sting goalie JP Susco with a second goal from Manganaro assists from Nick Allison and Jim Redstreake. Redstreake would make it 4-1 with assists from JJ Fichter and Nick Allison, Allison would score his own on a great feed from Chris Wolf and James Manganaro. Redstreake would score his second of the game from Robbie Fulton and Fichter with under a minute to go, 6-2 Grizzlies.
Game 2 would be much different. A Sting goal would put the Grizzlies down 1-0 again, but this time they answered in the first half with a power play goal from Redstreake assists to Cocozzo and Fulton. With JJ Fichter begging on the bench and saying “oh please score a shorthanded goal right here.”, because the Sting who would hold the puck in their own end for over 4 minutes on the delayed call and looked afraid of the Grizzlies at one point. Well Mike Keating did just that, scoring shorthanded with assists from Fulton and goaltender Andrew Goworek. The Sting would tie it on the same power play. Then we went to two overtimes where, the Grizzlies found themselves carrying the play and Robbie Fulton putting a backhand shot over the Sting goal farside, 3-2 Grizzlies in OT. “We really wanted to win that game after last week’s shootout loss and I just wanted to do it so bad for the team” says game winning goal scorer Robbie Fulton.
Game 3 would be much more of the same from Game 2. The Sting would score first again(a theme that developed in Games 1,2 and 3)but old faithful James Manganaro would tie it on a scramble in front of the Sting net, with assists to Mike Keating and Nick Allison. “We were all over them and I just went to the net hoping to find the puck and well it was just sitting behind the goalie and I put it in” says Manganaro. Overtime would begin and this time it would be another new hero for the Grizzlies, Jim Redstreake would streak down the rink and cut across waiting for the Sting goalie to sprawl out, he buried the goal, Grizzlies Win Game 3. Oh and that goal had an assist from Keating and Goworek also.
Well, it was time for Game 4 and the Grizzlies wanted to get another two points and they came out ready to play this time. The Grizzlies would score the first three goals of the game(the first game they scored first). First it was Redstreake from Fichter and Wolf, then Tim Fulton on a sweet two on one feed from Phil Coccozo , yes folks, Phil Coccozzo. Fulton would score the third goal(his second of the shift) on yet another sweet dish from Robbie Fulton, a cute brother to brother play “I knew he was my little brother, he can talk trash and he can even do some scoring”s ays older brother Robbie Fulton. Sting would make it 3-1, but the Grizzlies would answer with a goal from Robbie Fulton on a great pass from behind the net from Fichter and Tim Fulton. Allison would close out the scoring on a pass from Robbie Fulton and Keating. And with 7:11 remaining in the game and giving up 5 goals in this game, and 16 on the day on 91 shots, JP Susco had reached his limit of frustration and started a fight with Grizzlies Phil Coccozzo. With the Sting down 5-1 and their only goaltender being tossed, the game would be called. “We needed to play well this weekend, we have not played well all season, and well today helped thats for sure….a great team effort on this one.” says Head Coach Denis Jelcic. Andrew Goworek won all four games and reached the career 50 win total with his 52,53 and 54th wins in a Grizzlies uniform.
Grizzlies win all four games, sweep the Sting, get 8 points and are now 13-3-2 28 points after 18 games. The Grizzlies next games will be on December 18 at ISCA with games against Harrisburg.
