Well I’ve been home now for a few days after an 18 day journey in Illinois and it didn’t take long for reality to set in. After eating take out and sleeping in a hotel for over two weeks, it definitely hit home when my wife yelled at me to make the bed or to take the garbage out. The highlight though was getting a huge hug from my 3 1/2 year old Sydney and of course my nearly one year old Casey decided to start walking while I was away…something I’m sure I will never live down. But having a chance now that it is all over to look back at State Wars VI makes it all worthwhile as it surely was the biggest and best event I have been a part of.
Some immediate highlights that come to mind are: crowning the first ever Elite AAA Champions…the California Mission Axiom, watching the Elite All Star Game, seeing Team Pennsylvania 1995 win an unbelievable 6th straight title..dynasty anyone, watching 2003 Evan Leon from Florida score the winning breakaway in the Sniper Competition and then skate down the rink holding up his stick only to jump into his dads arms, watching Team Michigan 1992 kill off a penalty in OT against Team Alberta only to have Keith Long come out of the box and score the winner, seeing Johnny Mac ressurect Team NY from the dead aginst Missouri Meltdown, Team Illinois winning a very tough 1994 AAA division, how about Team Colorado 1998 knocking out an unbelievable Florida team and then a very strong Missouri squad, Ben Stewart with only one arm dominating the 2003 and 2002 divisions (definitely the talk of the tourney and an inspiration to us all!), an incredible Womens AAA final between California and Colorado…back and forth non stop action, anytime Sean Sully takes a penalty shot, hearing Downtown Georgie Brown sing the National Anthem, the Warrior outdoor blow up rink, having former NHLer Pat Verbeek in the building promoting his new Beek-Out product, a packed house for nearly every Great Skate Skills Competition, and the biggest highlight of all was having the first puck dropped on the newly improved Tour Rink!
Thanks once again to everyone who came out and either played, coached, or just watched games at State Wars VI. Hope to see everyone next year at tryouts and please help promote to get more and more players involved!
