The AIHL season officially kicked off Saturday, as the Richmond Robins traveled to Chantilly, VA to battle their closest foe the Potomac Mavericks, in Colonial Division action. The minor action was fierce as the defending Colonial Minor Champs came out strong in game one earning an 8-3 victory for goalie Trey Darnell. Shane Spencer and Forest Ford each tallied 2 goals a piece in the victory.
In game two the home town Mavericks found their grove as seven different players scored to earn a 7-5 victory over the tough Robins opponent. Reigning minor league goalie of the year Chris Hudgins had a tough outting giving up 7 goals on 26 shots. Alex DeYoung earned the victory in net for the Mavericks.
The elite match up was not as competitive, as a short bench seemed to hurt the visiting Robins. Brad Pryor scored twice in the game one victory for the Mavericks, as they skated to a 4-2 victory behind goalie John Beltrane, who has been elevated to the Elite level this season.
Game two was not as competitive, as the short bench really hit the Robins hard. Kevin Donovan scored a pair, as well as five other Mavericks netting goals in a lopsided 7-1 game two victory. Beltrane earned his second victory in as many starts giving up just three goals on the day.
The two teams meet again just over 24 hours later in Richmond for the second half of a home and home weekend.
