A very exciting weekend of hockey took place at Rivertown Sports in Grandville, Mi. 14 teams from across the Midwest took part in 3 separate divisions. Even with the (3) – 15 minute periods there were three games that went to shootout on Saturday.
T1 – Top Shelf Hockey beat out the Chi-Town Shamrocks 7-3 in the Championship game. The biggest come back of the weekend came during Saturday’ s round-robin game when the Grand Rapids Giraffes came back from a 4-goal deficit with 2:45 remaining in the game to tie the Chi-Town Shamrocks. Chi-Town won the game in overtime just as their power play expired.
T2 – The curse of being a #1 seed continued. The T2 division was split into two pools, each pool winner would receive a “bye” during the elimination round on Sunday. The #1 North – Lansing Hell Hounds fell in a shootout to the West Michigan Gong Show and the #1 Chi-Town Shamrocks fell to the local Hot Like Sauce team that eventually won the division with a 2-1 win over the Gong Show.
T3 – The newly formed T3 division featured many players who never played in a tournament before. A few never played 4-on-4 roller hockey before due to playing at a YMCA in Lansing that is only big enough for 3-on-3! The Lansing Hellhounds defeated the local Bluevortex.net team 4-2 in the championship game.
MIHA would like to thank Rivertown Sports, Frankie V’s restaurant, OUST bearings, IDS pucks, Days Inn, and all the players that contributed to such a great tournament. The last qualifying tournament is February 19-20th in Detroit at the Sports Forum. Sign-up is only $395 for T1 and $295 for T2/T3 and as always, the league provides the insurance.
