With 14 teams coming to Grand Rapids on January 29-30th, there will be 24 hours of hockey played over two days! MIHA teams will play in two full length games on Saturday followed by a single-elimination playoff bracket on Sunday. The teams signed up into three separate divisions and the winning teams will qualify for the championship event on March 26-27th, 2011 for a $1,000 cash prize in the top division and other prizes in the smaller divisions.
The T1 division features Top Shelf Hockey led by Josh Hill. They will battle against the Grand Rapids Giraffes, the Chi-Town Shamrocks, and the newly formed Grand Rapids Assassins. Top Shelf Hockey is the favorite as they just won the December tournament in Detroit.
The T2 division features six teams split into two divisions. The North Division features the West Michigan Gong Show (sponsored by Gong Show Hockey), the DREV Lansing Hellhounds, and “Hot Like Sauce”, who is comprised of mostly GVSU D2 players. Meanwhile, the South Division features WMU, Chi-Town Shamrocks, and Rizzo Services from Detroit. The Lansing Hellhounds look to finally win a tournament as they fell short in the championship game in the last two tournaments to the Chi-Town Shamrocks. The West Michigan Gong Show won two summer tournaments and will also be a contender.
The T3 division is new to MIHA. This division was created to give recreation players an opportunity to play in a tournament against teams from other parts of the Midwest. This division features four teams: The Grand Rapids Giraffes, the Chi-Town Shamrocks, the Lansing Hellhounds, and Bluevortex.net (Grand Rapids area team from Cedar Rock Sports Plex). Several of these players will be playing in their first ever tournmanet of any sort!
Several of the teams are coming on Friday night to participate in the Grand Rapids Griffins fundraiser and will be having lunch Saturday at the tournaments main sponsor, Frankie V’s. This is sure to be a great event and is always free to friends, family, and fans.
