Sting gets Stung by Grizzlies

Published on February 09, 2010 with No Comments

It was a snowy forecast for the weekend, but, Grizzlies General Manager Denis Jelcic and Sting General Manager Jason Muro got together on Friday afternoon and decided the games must go on!!! “We are tired of weather stopping games, we wanted to play, so Jelcic said they would be here no matter what, I told the refs to get here and we played says Muro.  So some of the Grizzlies arrived on Friday Night along with Jelcic were players Phil Cocozzo, James Manganaro and Chris Wolf…” I love the fact that the weather men were wrong again, we got up and there was no snow on the ground, good thing we didn’t cancel like the rest of the area.” says Jelcic.  Kris Moore, Andrew Goworek, Andrew Brodsky, Jeff Grabowski,Tom Youmans and Robbie Fulton would brave the storm and jump on the Long Island Expressway on Saturday morning.  Youmans would ride with our biggest fans, his parents Tom and BJ who were emotionally up and down the whole day….”These were good games, up and down all day….wow” Says Tom Youmans Sr……

The games were something to talk about.  Game 1 the Sting would score first before the Grizzlies would tie it and take a 3-1 lead.  Sting Coach Tim McManus pulled the Sting goaltender for their back up who backstopped them to a 4-3 win in game 1.  Game 2 the Grizzlies would take a 1-0 lead, only to be tied 1-1, and then the Grizzlies scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead and win.  Both teams would take an hour break so the Sting Minors and PA Rampage would play the minors series.  Game 3, the Sting would beat the Grizzlies 6-0.  Grizzlies Coach Jelcic would pull the goaltender with 2 minutes left and when asked why, his response was “Drew was getting pelted and needed a break, we needed him to be fresh for 2 more games”and thats what their goaltender was fresh and ready to go.

Game 4, the Grizzlies would be down 3-1, when Robbie Fulton took one for the team and got tossed for doing his usual ” hey ref , you’re—–terrible.”  Coach Jelcic called time out to assure his team the series was not out of reach, the Grizzlies who with 3:12 were down 3-1, scored the goal to get within one goal at 2:55, the tieing goal would be scored with 1:30 left.  The Sting used their time out, only for the Grizzlies to score :20 after their time out, Grizzlies win Game 4, 4-3.  Grizzlies goaltender Andrew Goworek stopped 3 breakaways and two 2 on 0′s when the Grizzlies were down 3-2.”He was huge for us all day, I didn’t think he could play all five, and he proved me wrong, he won this series for us.” Says Coach Denis Jelcic.

Game 5 would be incredible, well at least for the Grizzlies.  Sting would score first, the Grizzlies tied it 1-1.  Sting would take a 2-1 lead before the Grizzlies would immediately tie it.  The Sting would take a 3-2 lead on the power play, with 6 minutes to go in the game.  The Grizzlies would tie it with a little over 3 minutes left.  Then with a little bit over 2 minutes left the Grizzlies would take the lead for good on the power play 4-3.  The Sting would try to tie the game and had their best chance with :50 seconds left when they missed a shot that Grizzlies Goaltender Andrew Goworek got with the tip of his stick, and then they would put an empty netter in with :37 seconds left.  That would eliminate the Sting and send the Grizzlies to their first PIHA Championship Series in Colorado Springs, February 19-21…………..”We are beyond excited and can’t wait to go, we really didn’t think we would be there, but hey, —- happens….lets go now” says Coach Denis Jelcic.
