ISCA Grizzlies dedicate this tournament to their founder
One of the beauties of the sport of roller hockey is fun, enthusiasm and excitement. There are many programs in the sport of roller hockey that create that atmosphere and one of them is the ISCA Grizzlies. The ISCA Grizzlies from Wallington NJ have been playing in the tournament travel hockey world since 1996 and are one of the longest standing programs in the country. Founded by Michael Formisano Sr and his two sons, Michael Jr and Gregg the Inline Skating Club of America(ISCA) has grown into a hockey program that New Jersey can be proud of and that is best explained by their travel team director and rink Co-Owner Denis Jelcic. “We have had teams since the middle 90’s and are still around. We are proud of that and we know that Mr. Formisano was proud of it as well. He wanted to see our little house league program teams travel all over the country and play some of the biggest names in the game and they have done that”
In December of 2010 Mr. Formisano passed away, leaving behind an organization that will never forget him. He is still in our hearts and minds. ISCA has since had other members become part of the ownership and management group however the spirit of the rink is still the same. Hockey Referees at ISCA have been wearing a patch on their left arm that has “MF Sr” embroidered on, along with any travel hockey members wearing a sticker that has the same “MF Sr” on it. “Before I left for any National event, Mike Sr called me into his office and said, hey good luck at Narch. And then would jokingly add, by the way, your job depends on how well you do, and just smiled when I walked out the door” says Jelcic.
No matter what, he was always ready to speak to the team before any big trips, although after the first couple of years, he did let the coaching staff do all the talking as he waited for scores to be called into ISCA every summer during nationals. Jelcic also went on to say, “I used to always tell Mary, our Hockey Administrator, don’t say Good Luck before I leave, because you will jinx our chances. Mary would always give Mike Sr the scores when I called them in daily.”
This summer the ISCA Grizzlies will be wearing that same sticker on their helmets and dedicating this national tournament to Mr. Formisano who would be proud to know his teams are at NARCh fighting for the right to be called “National Champions”.
